Justice ~ Unsolved Murders 
I was very proud to go to the hearing on HB 661 to show my support, and I also spoke and gave testimony in support of the bill. This is what I said: I spoke about my experience of being on a jury for the first time ever, and it being a homicide case. It was horrible to hear the family members crying and sobbing, and the jury and the family members having to see the autopsy photos. But for that family, they got justice. The murderer was arrested and convicted. The murderer was under the influence of alcohol and other drugs when the murder happened. Several lives were ruined because of that, and it is appropriate to use the money from the drug forfeiture fund. My heart goes out to the families who have not experienced any closure and the one who murdered their loved one has not been brought to justice and it still at large. My second experience with murder was when my adopted son’s mother was murdered when he was 17 years old. Her killer has never been brought to justice. He is now 21 and there is not a day that goes by that he does not grieve for his mother, she was all he had and she was taken away from him forever. He also is eaten alive by anger that consumes him. Rep. Robertson said, “For the murder victim, it’s over…” I couldn’t disagree more. Homicide is a public safety issue. It could happen to any of us, or any of those we love… at any time, anywhere. There are still murderers out there, and we need to fund the Cold Case Unit as a matter of public safety…

I want to thank you for testifying yesterday. We need people that have never experienced such a horrific crime in their lives to understand that it is never over for the family left behind. A comment like the one Representative Robertson made shows ignorance his on the issue.
Murder lives through family members for the rest of their lives. When the murderer is not arrested or the body of a loved one not found it is forever a haunting mystery for the family.
I also believe that many do not understand the achievements when a cold case is solved. Organizing, reviewing, researching, and interviewing on a case that is decades old is time consuming.
Maybe Representative Robertson needs to go to a murder crime scene and experience the gruesomeness of it all. Let him see a body that’s been mutilated, look at the remains, see the blood splattered on the walls, smell what a victim smells like after laying there for three days. If he sees a child beaten, raped, strangled, stripped of her clothing, left on the ground, and then run over by a car, understanding she suffered greatly before she died, maybe then he would change his mind. Maybe if it was one of his own family members, one of his children, then he could understand. Look into the eyes of Celina Cass’s mom and tell her it’s not important to solve a crime and arrest a murderer. Just because a case is not on the list of cold cases doesn’t mean it’s not a cold case.
You are right Carolee, it is a public safety issue. How many murders have been committed because the person was drunk and out of their mind on drugs? Drug addicts looking for money to fund their addiction.
I said in my letter that Amanda Grady read for me,” What kind of crimes does a murderer commit if not arrested? There isn’t any crime that he/she would not do once they have murdered. Every crime after is insignificant, even taking another persons life!”
Thank you again for what you did. You get it. The victim doesn’t suffer anymore but the family left behind continues to suffer long after their loved one was murdered.
