It was announced today that Matthew Hoffman will not go to trial for the gruesome murders of Tina, Kody, and Stephanie. Or for the kidnapping and rape of thirteen year old Sarah. I live in Mount Vernon now and as Kathy’s murder changed the small town of Franklin New Hampshire in 1971, so will these horrific crimes change this small community forever.
Hoffman pleaded guilty to all ten charges against him. His sentence, life in prison with no chance for parole. Some may wonder why the families didn’t seek the death penalty. I don’t know why they made this decision. I do know they won’t have to endure a long trial and hear the graphic details of how the people they love were murdered. Little Sarah, who is thirteen, will not have to face this man in court. She’s been through enough and lost much.
Over the years I’ve tried to prepare myself for Kathy’s trial if an arrest was ever made. How does one prepare to hear the details? The gruesome details of how the one they love suffered from a murderer’s hands. I have to say, I am thankful that the families will not have to endure such an ordeal. They have all been through the unimaginable already.

A Child Is Missing exposes the reality that murder follows a family throughout their entire life. Future events often loop back to the day when a loved one's life was taken by the hands of a murderer.
Karen's sister Kathy was murdered in 1971. The case was reactivated in 1983 and again in 2004. In 2006 Kathy's remains were exhumed for DNA. A Child is Missing: Searching for Justice is the sequel to A Child Is Missing, it covers the reopening of Kathy's investigation in 2004 to present date. Karen interviewed over fifty people for the sequel and acquired new information from retired investigators.
